(Real name: Storm James Thompson) is a Bristol-based DJ and broadcaster known for her era-fusing, time-warping sets. Her sound is shaped by her Caribbean heritage and a family legacy rooted in carnival culture, combined with the raw energy of British underground dance music. Growing up in Southend, Stormy J first cut her teeth on local dance stations in Essex before making her mark on the London airwaves. Now, she’s pioneering a bold new sound: jab-house—a high-octane sub-genre of electronic dance music which is characterised by the fusion of jab jab culture, rave culture, house music and gutter soca music. With its driving 160 BPM tempo, four-on-the-floor beat, conch shells, horns, biscuit tins, and a spirit of extreme freedom, jab-house is designed to move bodies and liberate minds. Stormy J made history by producing the world’s first jab-house DJ mix and jab-house DJ movies. Since then, her unique sound has landed on platforms like Sian Anderson’s BBC 1Xtra show and headline shows at Bristol club nights including Terrain and Ruffnek Diskotek. In 2025, the jab-house sound has taken Stormy J to stages at Shambala Festival, Boardmasters Festival and Miami Music Week. Now, Stormy J brings the world’s first jab-house radio show to Select – the home of house and electronic music. This show is a celebration of Caribbean carnival and rave culture, a space where her roots and future collide.

Stormy J has translated the jab-house movement not only sonically but also visually. The visuals in her Jab-house 2025 DJ movie celebrate movement and freedom — from ravers on the dance floor to commuters in motion. It honours the Windrush generation, bringing visibility to the Transport For London journeys they carried through everyday life. At its heart, this piece is about taking up space through joy, rhythm, and the spirit of jab jab culture — a tribute to the ancestors whose presence lives on in us.
